The Colour of February

I recently did posts on decorating with yellow (because it’s so cheerful) and blue (which was the focus of House Beautiful’s recent issue.) I thought a post about red would be fitting as it is the colour associated with the month of February. As we are in the depths of a cold spell here in Canada (well at least where I am near Toronto), what better way to warm things up than with the colour red.

There are many shades of red from persimmon (orange red) to burgundy (purple red). Red is often seen in dining rooms and kitchens because they say it stimulates appetite, as well as conversation. Red brings life and energy to a room and works well with warm and cool colours. Most of the photos below are of a fresher red and in most cases red was used with a light hand. A little goes a long way - a cushion, a throw, flowers, art, rather than painting all four walls of a room.

  1. Red is a great colour. We have a red accent wall in the family room, and red is the accent colour in the kitchen. I'm actually on the hunt for the perfect red salt & pepper mills :-)

Love the black bookshelves with the red back, and the red wainscoting is an interesting twist on the typical white wainscoting. And is that a birch bark wall behind the bed with the red headboard?! Cool!!

  2. Loving the hits of red! I plan on using red in my family room decor... IF that basement room EVER gets finished (never-ending reno!). Right this minute, I'm going to create a "red" folder and save some favourites of what you've found. Cheers!

  4. Such a great collection of photos. I agree that the red frames in the hallway make a statement and I especially like the red against the soft turquoise wall.

I left a suggestion for pink below the comment you made on my blog. I hope you find is helpful. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.
