The Shelf Life of a Kitchen

Happy Friday! Where did that week go?

I was asked to write for hgtv.ca recently and my first article went live a few weeks ago. I decided to write about what makes a kitchen timeless.

If you have been reading Decor Happy for awhile or follow me on Pinterest, you kind of know what the article would say.

I based the article on this cover shot from one of the magazines in my ever-growing archive. (Yes, Vanessa you need to make purging one of your 2014 goals!) It’s from 2004 which probably means the kitchen was renovated well before that. The thing about the kitchen is it could just as easily be on the cover of a magazine today, 10 years later.  It even has splashes of pink and I find the overall look of this small kitchen so charming.

Here’s another cover from, wait for it, 1998. It’s Lynda Reeves renovated kitchen (that’s editor Suzanne Dimma on the ladder.) Sixteen years later and this kitchen is still so beautiful. I remember just staring at the double stacked cabinets and rolling ladder and thinking how beautiful it was.

Read the article to find out why I think some kitchens stand the test of time and others don’t.

(Note that they added some photographs of the kitchen from an MLS listing so avert your eyes to the un-styled, unflattering photos!) Just focus on the words.  (Speaking of words, I didn’t call myself “stylish” – that was the lovely editor!)

Happy weekend friends! I hear the weather is warming up to a balmy 6° C tomorrow.  Almost shorts weather! :)

  1. Congratulations! And yes I am a sucker for a good white kitchen. Our future kitchen reno will be a white cabinet and wood counter top one.

  4. Congrats! This is perfect timing for me as we're renovating our kitchen in the spring and I've been torn on cabinet color. So many choices....but so much fun!

  5. I agree completely with the article. However, I am stuck with very high end light Maple cabinets that tend to look pinky orange at times and a bossy baltic brown granite. Ive tried to decorate around them with more neutral items but I still dont like them.
Is it a crime to paint them???
