Meeting Up with Sarah Richardson and Tommy Smythe

Like most other design loving Canadians, I have been following Sarah Richardson’s career since her early days on Room Service.  I remember thinking “this girl is going places” and boy did she ever!  She went on to host and produce HGTV’s Design Inc, Sarah’s House, Sarah’s Cottage and is launching Sarah 101 in a few weeks, January 4th to be exact.

Her designs are liveable and stylish, a mix of new and vintage and almost always feature beautiful fabrics as a jumping off point.  I love that she shares her sources – retailers, antique stores, fabric houses etc.

She also runs a successful interior design business, has her own paint and furniture lines and writes for the Globe and Mail.  One busy, smart and talented lady!

The witty and stylish Tommy Smythe has been an integral part of her team since the Design Inc. days.  He is a great sounding board, has impeccable taste and their on screen chemistry is brilliant.  (I still smile when I think of the Sarah’s House episode with the snake. So funny!)

A few days ago I received an email from Sarah’s publicist inviting me (as well as other design bloggers) to interview Sarah and Tommy.    Are there any burning questions you would like me to ask this talented and stylish duo?

  1. Would you please ask whether Sarah will ever sell her furniture line in the United States? Thanks so much!

  2. I adore their style and watching their genuine friendship. I would love to know how they met and if they knew they were design kindred spirits right away?

  6. I found your blog by doing a random search for Tommy Smythe on Twitter. I hardly use Twitter but am constantly craving new designs from the dynamic duo that is Sarah & Tommy. I'm adding you to my Google Reader so I can read your blog every time you post :)

The question I'd ask Sarah & Tommy (BTW SO Jealous you get to interview them!) is:

I have expensive tastes and a limited budget, if you had only $1000 to design a room that looked expensive but satisfied the budget,
where would you shop for deals?

    Thanks!

  9. Hi Vanessa, what a treat for you to get this chance! I would love to know if there is a book showcasing her designs in the works? As well as, is there a way to have her all of her paint colours on a card/fandeck (haven't seen this at Lowes - just the individual chips). Good luck and let us know all about it!
    Cheers,
    Alexandra

  13. WOW! That's so wonderful - I look forward to reading the interview. I would ask Sarah what the best way to get your work published in an interior magazine.

  14. What are the rules when using an antique rug?
How many patterns are too many?
How much coordination should exist between floor coverings when rooms flow into each other?
How do you keep budget friendly from looking cheap?
How do you keep layered from looking messy/cluttered?

Is that enough? Have fun! I love them too!

  17. Ooooh, lucky you!! Sarah & Tommy are like Batman & Robin, Captain & Tenille, the Lone Ranger & Tonto.... a totally fab twosome :-)

I'm too excited for you to think of any questions right now! Ummmm... I'd love to know more about Sarah's house - what it looked like when she bought it, what inspired her decorating, what does she like best & least about it....

Also... how did Sarah & Tommy meet and are as good friends in real life as they appear to be on TV. What one thing do they like most and least about each other. Does Tommy still live in his teeny-tiny apartment.

Well, I guess I wasn't stuck for questions for too long, was I?!

HAVE FUN! Can't wait to read your interview :-)

  19. Wow! What fun you will have,,, but there is one thing wrong,,, I think they mixed up and invited you instead of ME! LOL I had not heard of her new show and I did some research on it and was not able to come up with when it would be on here in the lower 48. If you know could you share the info I don’t want to miss it.
    Thanks, Becky

  21. I just stumbled across your blog for the first time and thought I would say hello! I looked through a few of your posts and love your style. You seem to really know your stuff :)

I'm a blogger as well, about the world of art, but my history is in interior design and fashion. I love to hear what people are saying! Hope we get to see more of each other in the future.
